Ingredients:
- 500g small onions (peeled and halved)
- 3 tomatoes (chopped)
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp coriander seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 1 tsp chana dal
- 2 red chilies
- 1 tsp tamarind paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Oil for cooking
Instructions:
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, urad dal, and chana dal. Cook until they turn golden brown.
- Add red chilies and cook for a few seconds.
- Add small onions and cook until they turn translucent.
- Add tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add tamarind paste, turmeric powder, and salt to taste. Mix well.
- Cook for a few minutes, until the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
- Serve hot with rice or chapati.
Note: You can adjust the spice level to your liking by adding more or less red chilies.
- If you want to add some more flavor you can add some curry leaves, ginger and garlic paste.
- Once you add the ginger-garlic paste sauté for a minute and then add the curry leaves.
- Add 1/4 cup of water and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 mins.
- Keep stirring occasionally and make sure the mixture doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan.
- Once the onions are cooked through and the mixture starts to thicken, turn off the heat.
- Serve the Kannekudi Katne with rice or chapati and garnish with some coriander leaves.
